Ikan announces the release of the new Ottica NDI®|HX PTZ Video Camera, the first of its kind among Ikan's many product lines. Integrated into the Ottica is NDI's NDI|HX, a high efficiency IP video production streaming protocol for high quality video transmission over local area networks. NDI is part of the Vizrt Group alongside its sister brands Vizrt and NewTek, and a technology that allows video, audio, and metadata signals to be shared bi-directionally over a standard Ethernet network. With the connection of a single Ethernet cable, users can benefit from Power over Ethernet, Audio/Video transmission, tally, and PTZ controls.

The Ottica features a 1/2.8″ CMOS sensor and 5.5-110mm varifocal lens with 20x optical zoom to capture videos at a maximum resolution of 1080p at 60fps. It supports HDMI, SDI, Ethernet, RS-232, RS-485, and audio-in connectivity. The camera uses a step drive motor mechanism and motor drive controller for smooth and noiseless PTZ operation. In addition, it supports H.264/H.265 video compression and AAC, MP3, and G.711A audio compression formats.

The Ottica's integration of NDI|HX makes it convenient to stream live video from anywhere on your network. NDI|HX works on a much lower bandwidth, compromised with low latency of about 50 milliseconds, virtually undetectable by the human eye thanks to great technological advances in high efficiency coding from NDI.

The Ottica employs an autofocus algorithm that ensures the lens's focusing performance is fast, accurate, and stable. The low noise CMOS effectively ensures the camera's high SNR. Advanced 2D/3D noise reduction technology is also used to further reduce the noise while ensuring image sharpness. By adopting a high accuracy step-driving motor mechanism, the Ottica performs smoothly and quietly even when moving quickly to any position. The Ottica supports a low-power sleep/wake up function consuming lower than 500mW while in sleep mode. The Ottica supports RS-232 cascade function which is convenient for installing. One cable is included in the box. You can program up to 255 preset camera positions (10 presets by IR remote). VISCA, PELCO-D, PELCO-P protocols are supported and can also be automatically recognized.

FRIEDRICHSDORF, Germany – December 15, 2015 – MAXON, the leading developer of professional 3D modeling, painting, animation and rendering solutions, today announced that Culver City-based design and visual effects studio Cantina Creative relied on its acclaimed 3D software solution, Cinema 4D, as a central digital content creation tool to generate 120 visual effects shots and 30 hologram shots ranging from holograms, animated posters, monitor shots and user interface (UI) graphics that appear throughout the Lionsgate sequel, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2.

Mockingjay Part 2 is the fourth and final epic science fiction dystopian film installment in the The Hunger Games film series, and the second of two films based on the novel Mockingjay, the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins. The film follows Jennifer Lawrence who reprises her role as Katniss Everdeen, the reluctant leader of the rebellion against the Capitol district in the post apocalyptic nation of Panem who must bring together an army, while all she holds dear hangs in the balance. The film was released on November 20, 2015 in the United States.

The Cantina Creative VFX team on Mockingjay Part 2 − which also provided extensive visual effects for Mockingjay Part 1 − comprised of VFX Supervisors Jay Grunfeld and Venti Hristova, VFX Producer Donna Cullen, Compositing Supervisor and Cantina Creative Co-founder, Stephen Lawes, and Executive Producer and Cantina Creative Co-founder, Sean Cushing, again

worked closely with Mockingjay Part 2 Director, Francis Lawrence, and VFX Supervisor, Charles Gibson, who provided creative direction in terms of design content requirements.

Other artists on the Cantina Creative team included: Jayse Hansen, Alan Torres, Stephen Morton, Sang Youb Shin, Nhi Ngoc Vo, Alexandra Boden, Julianne Dome, Aaron Eaton, Matt Eaton, Junghwa Hong, Lauren Hulsey, Jennifer Kennedy, Karla Curby, Tony Lupoi, Leown Nowlin, Jr., and Fernando Raigoza, Jr.

Hristova explains that the studio’s primary focus on Mockingjay Part 1 was to generate interactive on-set monitor graphics that would stream live during shooting and that for Mockingjay Part 2 the team was given a more extensive range of post-heavy challenges that included the exclusive use of Cinema 4D to create two main hologram effects and to composite hero monitor screens that required story specific information and animations to advance key plot sequences.

“Our aesthetic reach in this film was much broader and required us to deliver a more advanced design style as we were asked to create detailed 3D hologram content for the Capitol – marking the first time that The Hunger Games film audiences could get a close-up look at the capital city of Panem and the Capitol, its chief legislative building, as well as a collection of other Panem districts,” says Grunfeld. “We were also tasked with generating the hologram for the 'Nut', a strategic military compound located in an underground mountain bunker which houses all the military equipment for the Capitol.”

“Although Lawrence and the Lionsgate team had very clear ideas in regards to the aesthetic needs of each corresponding environment in Mockingjay Part 2, the collaboration gave us plenty of liberty to experiment with style and feel,” said Grunfeld. “To meet the technical complexities of a movie of this scope demanded that we rely on the various toolsets in our Cinema 4D pipeline which provided us the creative flexibility to explore and tweak story notes throughout the project, critical in delivering a number of beautiful storytelling graphics on some very challenging design sequences. In combination with After Effects, we were able to generate external compositing tags and compositing project files throughout all of the hologram sequences that further resulted in an efficient workflow.”

The “Nut” hologram, in particular, challenged the Cantina Creative team to deliver a fully detailed, 3D photoreal and precise mountain range with only a single 2D matte painting to use as reference. 3D artist Jayse Hansen who worked with Cantina on Mockingjay Part 2 in preproduction and on location designed the initial hologram concept including the entire interior of the Nut (crew quarters, armory, hovercraft hangars, etc.) explains: “Leveraging the landscape generator in Cinema 4D to block off shapes and the expansive sculpting tools in the software provided great creative latitude so that I could hand off a number of very precise hologram looks and models of the mountainous terrain surrounding the “Nut” and Capitol from different perspectives,” said Hansen. These concepts were then further refined by Stephen Morton who created a final workable version that helped the team work out positions for important story elements for several hologram sequences.

“In addition to the sculpting tools which proved critical in allowing artists to further customize and organize the project in layers and work nondestructively to churn out dozens of iterations of mountain topography, we used Cinema 4D to render a number of passes, namely a few variations of cel renders, layered procedural shaders, and a depth map. We also exported light and null data to use for additional elements in comp,” adds Morton.

“The time effector tool was also extremely useful on the mountain hologram to rotate topography designs uniformly across nearly 30 shots in the sequence and made it easy to explore rotation speeds and successfully arrive at something that both the client and we were pleased with.”

More Than a Kilometre of Digital Signage in 30 Days

Earlier this year, Melbourne based motion graphics and animation studio, Yes Captain was commissioned by the AFL to create digital fan engagement for five clubs. A project the studio delivered in just 30 days.

Established in 2013 by designer, animator and filmmaker James Cowen the studio is a one-stop shop for clients who want a no fuss approach for their motion graphic and animation projects.

“The creative output for AFL was massive," explained James. “We produced more than a kilometre of digital signage which was featured across two seating levels, at three of Australia’s biggest sporting stadiums, Etihad, the MCG and Simonds Stadium.”

Employing a range of techniques, including traditional hand drawn animation, 3D character animation, motion graphics, and 3D elements, Yes Captain brought to life pre-game excitement, key in-game moments, plus a swag of team mascots including a running and barking Bulldog, a flying Captain Carlton, a boxing Kangaroo, and a screeching Geelong Cat. At over 47,000 pixels in width, is the largest digital screen content in Australia.

When 30,000 Pixels is Just Not Enough

“Given Adobe After Effects taps out at 30,000 pixels, the project presented quite a few challenges in creating, viewing and judging the work on our studio monitors! Our team came up with some clever scripting and project structuring to make it work.”

Detailed 3D Cityscapes for Victorian Government Wi-Fi

Alongside the event, film and television motion graphics that Yes Captain produces, the studio has also been called upon to create explainer videos, something that many organisations are using more and more of in their customer and employee communication.

After winning a competitive pitch, Yes Captain created an explainer video for the Victorian Government when they launched a pilot of free public Wi-Fi in central Melbourne, central Ballarat and central Bendigo. Yes Captain managed everything from the greenscreen shoot, through design, extensive 3D modelling, and animation, producing a series of videos and printed material to support the launch of the campaign.

This project meant building detailed 3D cityscapes of each town.

“We drew heavily from a variety of online map services to get the locations and layout just right, and our talented modelling team met the challenge head on using Cinema 4D’s robust modelling tools.”

Cinema 4D is a program that James says the studio simply can’t do without.

“We’ve been using Cinema 4D for sometime now and can’t imagine not having it in our studio pipeline. Having used other 3D packages in the past, nothing compares to the flexibility and sheer joy of using Cinema 4D,” says James.

“We’ll do anything to sneak it into every job, even ones you wouldn’t expect it to be used on, because it’s just so much fun to use which best allows us to flex our creative muscle. Cinema 4D already allows an artist to quickly experiment and try a variety of ideas.We can’t wait to try the new take system in R17 that promises to push this workflow ideal even further.”

How the Program Works

Created to simplify the process of licensing, installing and updating multiple suites at once, Red Giant’s new Volume Licensing Program uses a floating license server model called Reprise License Manager (RLM) for easy management. With RLM, Red Giant volume customers requiring 10 or more seats can now “check out” licenses for use on individual client machines, then “check in” licenses after they are finished being used. This makes tracking licenses simple, while ensuring that only the exact number of licenses that were purchased are being used at any given time.

IT administrators can also gather data on each individual license, including how many are being used and when. This hands the control back to the company and increases work efficiency – administrators will always know if they have the right number of suites for their entire organization, which means they can expand or contract as needed. Airpul Product Overview

The Airpul Wireless Transmission packages provide wireless transmission of HD video signals in the 5GHz range. The AC8231 system is capable of a transmission distance to around 200m (700ft) clear line of sight. That distance can dramatically increase to around 600m (2,000ft) clear line of sight with the optional Panel Antenna for the AC8262 Receiver.

Both transmission systems are quick to set up and take moments to auto pair with auto and manual frequency and power output selection.

The AC8231 Transmitter has built-in V-Locks for camera and external battery power. The AC6151 has built-in battery for the transmitter and equipped with a hot-shoe mount. All menu functions are intuitive and displayed on a clear OLED screen. The AC8231 system also includes two colour Tally and is capable of Multicast with optional AC8231 Transmitters. There is a USB port for future firmware upgrades.

Using TriCaster in a new and innovative way, the engineering team at WAAY connected two TriCasters together; using one for broadcast and live streaming, and the other for delivering video and still images.

But it was TriCaster’s integrated virtual set system that ultimately tipped the scales. The production team at WAAY now had access to the built-in virtual sets that they could customize to their programming. Finally, they could do what they always wanted to do with their studios, without the added cost of set builds and additional space.

The challenge for WAAY was to create the most visually dynamic and competitive local HD newscast their limited budget would permit. To do this, they decided to take a risk on a very unconventional approach—to base their live HD newscasts on NewTek's TriCaster, which integrates the funtionality of a hi-def control room within a compact system costing less than $50,000.

In the fall of 2011, WAAY bought and installed two systems: a TriCaster 850 with eight video inputs, two downstream keyers (DSK's), and two digital disk recorders (DDR's); and a TriCaster 300 three-input switcher with two DSK's and one DDR. The cost of the two systems together is like a down-payment on a conventional HD production control room. These systems, which went live on December 11, 2011, enabled WAAY to sucessfully and cost-effectively transition its local news to HD.

The TriCaster 850 serves as WAAY's main production switcher, and its two DDR's and DSK's serve as a dual-channel HD graphics system. Situated right next to it is the TriCaster 300, which essentially serves as a dual-channel HD server capable of delivering both video and still images to the on-set monitors. Its program and "aux" outputs feed video and graphics to two 50-inch LCD monitors on the news set.

The vision to use TriCaster in this very innovative way was the brainchild of Jonathan Crowe, WAAY's chief engineer. "By taking full advantage of the capabilities inherent in TriCaster, WAAY is spared buying separate components, like the HD switcher, graphics, and server system," Crowe said. "Those three components are among the biggest expenses in any live HD production control room, and this functionality is alredy factored in TriCaster's incomparable price-performance."
